Welcome to Grade 5/6
Literacy:
Our Literacy block consists of a non-negotiable two-hour block each day. During this time students are participating in Read to self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Listen to Reading (Reading Eggspress) and Teacher Focus Groups in a series of rotations throughout the week. Individual conferencing and goal setting occurs during Teacher Focus times.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics we use real life problems to engage our students. We explicitly teach important mathematical ideas, skills and problem solving strategies that students will draw on in their personal and work lives.
Inquiry:
Term 1 – Belonging (Health and Capabilities)
Term 2 – Where in the World? (Design and Technologies)
Term 3 – Survival of the Fittest / Change (Science)
Term 4 – Making a Scene (The Arts and Technologies)
Spelling Mastery:
Increasing student’s bank of known words and strategies for tackling new words is our ongoing goal. Students participate in spelling mastery four times per week at a set time in multi-level groups. The levels range from phonemic awareness, then levels A-F.
Respectful Relationships:
Respectful Relationships supports our school to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence. Students participate in lessons with activities targeted at each year level.
Communication:
Each student has their own personal school dairy. Students are required to complete home reading each night for homework. In grade 5/6 it is expected that the students are writing everything in their diary themselves, all the parents/guardians need to do is provide a signature. This diary is also the preferred method of contact between teacher/student/parent. For any major issues feel free to contact the school in order to make a time to meet with myself.
Thanks,
